Medical Oncology Department;
It is the branch of medicine responsible for the treatment of cancer diseases with chemotherapy. It is derived from the word “onko” meaning tumor. It is also known as the medical oncology department.
They provide health services by cooperating with other oncology departments in stages such as the prevention of cancer diseases, early diagnosis and conducting cancer screenings.
Cancer diseases are the second most common cause of death globally. Especially uterine, breast, lung, bowel, prostate, thyroid, stomach and bladder cancers are the most common types of cancer.
Until recently, radiotherapy and surgical methods were used to treat these diseases. However, since these treatments are not sufficient to prevent the spread of cancer or completely remove it from the body, the use of immunotherapy and chemotherapy treatments has been started.
The increase in death cases due to cancer diseases necessitated taking measures on a global scale and increasing the researches.
In our country, efforts have been initiated to increase the number of onco hospitals and hospitals that provide free cancer treatment. As of 2018, additional allowances received in private hospitals were prohibited, and treatments, especially oncology surgery procedures, were made free of charge.
Medical Oncology department, which is a sub-branch of Internal Medicine, is not only in the treatment of cancer diseases with chemotherapy; It also plays a role in the treatment of health problems such as anemia, pneumonia and an increase in the amount of calcium in the blood.
It also determines how chemotherapy treatments will be administered, at what dose, how many sessions will be applied, drugs to be used, possible side effects and precautions to be taken. In this department, medical oncologists, oncology doctors, oncology professors, oncology nurses and other healthcare professionals work together.
